About Elena Milani

Elena Milani designs and creates artistic ceramics for refined interiors and gardens from her independent atelier in San Cassiano, nestled in the Valchiavenna valley of northern Italy. Her artistic path is grounded in classical fine arts, having graduated with honors in Scenography from the renowned Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan before dedicating her practice entirely to master ceramic craftsmanship.

Before ceramics, she trained in multimedia graphics and spent several years working as a graphic designer - a path she eventually left behind, unsatisfied with how little creative room it gave her. Working independently as a decorator and artist afterward, she came to clay almost by accident and immediately knew it was where she belonged. She has spent the years since studying under established Italian ceramic artists, sharpening both her technique and her understanding of the material itself.

One influence stands out above the rest: Masaki Iwana, the Japanese Butō dancer, whose philosophy reshaped how she thinks about her own work. From him she took a particular respect for the natural world, a pull toward essentialism, and a way of treating emptiness not as absence but as its own kind of presence - what Iwana called "the intensity of nothingness."

Her entire production is organized into distinct thematic collections, each rooted in a core conceptual inquiry and developed into unique, entirely handmade pieces. Rather than reproducing botanical specimens literally, Milani approaches sculpture through a deliberate philosophy of subtraction. She strips away the superfluous until only the essential gesture remains, allowing volume, texture, line, and silhouette to evoke nature rather than merely describe it.

Her work draws profound inspiration from organic structures across the natural world:

  • Botanical Architecture & Seed Casings: Formations inspired by protective seed pods, plant capsules, and natural geometry that mirror the bone structures of living organisms.
  • Ecosystems & Biodiversity: Textures that evoke mosses, lichens, wetland stones, and pollinator honeycomb nests.
  • Material Dialogue: Tactile stoneware, engobed terracotta, and contrasting enamels that highlight the unvarnished qualities of earth and fire.

Where the Work Begins

Milani traces the start of every piece back to stillness. Work or rest, she keeps returning to the garden she has turned into a kind of personal sanctuary - a place of forms that are always changing but never really new. That attentiveness is where the ceramics come from: vessels shaped by curiosity about biodiversity and a wish to feel like part of something larger and older than anything people make.

Recognition

She has shown her work publicly since 2003, with solo exhibitions at the Ken Damy Museum in Brescia, the International Photography Festival in Quito, Officina Fotografica in Milan, and Casa del Pellegrino in Civate. A land art piece of hers appeared at Expo Milano 2015. More recently her ceramics have been shown at Cersaie in Bologna, the Italian High Craftsmanship Fair at the Arsenale in Venice, and Milan's Salone del Mobile, and in 2025 she took part in "Doppia Firma," a Cologni Foundation project staged during the Fuorisalone. One of her pieces now has a permanent home at the Giacometti Foundation in Bregaglia, Switzerland.

Terre: A Drought Remembered

Among her most personal work is the Terre series, begun in 2023 during a severe drought that left her own garden withered and killed the trees around it. The pieces carry that memory directly: dark clay vessels split open before drying, their two halves warped just enough that they no longer align. The resulting gaps are mended with steel paper clips - an imperfect, visibly makeshift repair - and the surfaces are textured with crushed ceramic to suggest cracked, sun-starved earth. Filled with fresh flowers, though, these broken forms come back to life, the way a dry field does the moment the rain returns.
